Summary of Primary Audience Research

Lois Brown
For primary audience research I created a poll and a survey. My poll was based on the contents of actual sitcom programmes, whereas my survey was based on websites for sitcoms. The results of my poll show that people prefer sitcoms to be based around groups of friends over anything else. The second most popular was sitcoms based around school/college/uni/work. I also found out that people prefer sitcoms to be based around characters rather than visuals. Therefore, when creating our own sitcom, we will most likely create a show focused around friends in college, school or uni so that we satisfy our audience's wants.
My survey results show that on a website, people prefer to see videos, behind the scenes footage and information on characters the most. People visit websites the most in order to watch video footage. Therefore, when we create our website, we must ensure that we include videos and information on characters in order to create a website that the audience will like. In the survey, I also asked people what they liked and disliked the most about The Inbetweeners website. Now we know what to include and what not to include in our own website.

Georgie Field
http://mediageorgie.blogspot.co.uk/2012/11/primary-research-questionnaire-results.html
Georgie also conducted a survey for part of her primary audience research. Her survey focused on what people like and dislike about sitcoms. She also asked the audience what they would like to see in a new sitcom. She found out that the most popular stereotypes are 'the joker' and 'the geek' and that most people prefer a mixed gender cast. Therefore, in our own sitcom we will use these ideas so that we give the target audience what they want

Sam Evans and Charlotte Maguire
http://mediacharley.blogspot.co.uk/2012/11/final-verison-of-focus-group-questions.html
Sam and Charlotte both conducted a focus group in order to find out what our target audience likes about a sitcom. They found that people are attracted to sitcoms because of the humour and their favourite sitcom is 'The Big Bang Theory'. They also found out a lot about characters. They found that characters appeal to people most in a sitcom and that weird/geeky characters are our audience's favourite type of character. Therefore, in our own sitcom we will focus mainly on our characters and use the character types that we know our audience will like

Analysis of Website Survey Results

1. Which of these would you most like to see on a website for a television sitcom?

Videos- 64%
Behind-the-scenes footage- 60%
Info on characters- 56%
Links to episode catch-up- 56%

These are the most popular choices for Question One. Therefore, all of these options should be used on our website, to ensure our audience will like it.
These results show that people are more interested in watching video clips or full episodes of the programme than anything else. They are also interested in finding out more about the show by watching behind-the-scenes footage and learning more about characters.

2. Why do you visit websites for television programmes?

To watch episodes of the programme- 64%
To find out more about the programme- 44%

These are the two most popular choices for Question Two. This backs up the results from Question One, showing that people are, in fact, highly interested in watching episodes of the programme on-line and finding more about the programme.

Surprisingly, only 8% of people are interested in user involvement and social networking. This is also shown in Question One where less than a quarter of people said they were interested in links to Facebook and Twitter.

3. Visit The Inbetweeners website. What do you like about it?

'The colour scheme is good but not too overpowering with good use of fonts that are correct in size, clear and precise. The content links feel intuitive so the site feels natural to use.'

'The website has large and bright pictures. And is easy to navigate around.'

'Its has a lot of videos of and about the program'

'Easy access to all the areas you might want to view to do with the show. Very simple. I like the comment section'

'I like the recurring background on the website, and the various videos that are on there including the 'top ten' moments, and that there are lots of links to go on at the side menu.'

'Easy to navigate allowing the viewer to find a episode quickly and easy catch up.'

4. What do you dislike about the Inbetweeners website?

'I would like to see a link to a forum on the front page and also an episode guide so i can instantly see series episode names and a quick overview of that episode. the site should have clear social media links. Nothing on the site feels that it is any natural order although all the links are clear they feel thrust onto the home page without much thought.'

'Too many spaces that could have been filled with more information.'

'The colour scheme for the "Stuff happening now..." could be unreadable to people with eyesight difficulties. There is not a lot of information about the show jumping out at the top of the page. They are assuming people already know about the show, as an advertising technique to try and get a wider audience it falls short in explaining the set up of the show. The layout is very uninspiring, this is true of most of the E4 website, three columns with the bulk of the relevant information in the center, this means the user has to scroll down a lot and makes the page seem a lot more full than it is, this can turn people off thinking that they don't want to spend ages looking for the information they require. It also takes a while to find the navigation menu for other areas to do with the show. compared to the BBC's Top Gear site (www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006mj59) it is easy to see the flaws. Here all the the navigation to find out more information is across the top meaning a wider area for them to place the core details, this means images are wider drawing your eye to the page, also with the neutral colour scheme it makes the whole site easy to read and follow. there is more information on the front page but because of the layout it seems less cluttered and easier to read.'

'I don't like that the layout is just a simple list to various links.'

'Not much information about what the sitcom is about'

'The main page looks crowded and busy. There's lots of text and links all over the homepage. The main navigation bar at the side doesn't stand out and gets lost in the rest of the content.'

'too packed needs to be spaced out'

'that it shows clips from the show as well as information and funny things such as the "where you worse that this" link near the bottom.'

The comments made my the participants of the survey have told me a lot about what they want from a website. For example:

  • They want a simple colour scheme
  • They want fonts that are easy to read
  • They like to be able to navigate around the site easily
  • They like having a comment section
  • They want to be able to view videos
  • They like the use of slang because they are able to relate to it
  • They would like a forum included in the website
  • They would like an episode guide to be featured
  • They like links to social networking sites to be clear
  • They like the website to be ordered logically
  • They want to see what the show is about
  • They don't like to have to scroll for ages to find what they want
  • They don't want an overly crowded homepage
