Summary of Secondary Audience Research

Lois Brown
For my secondary audience research, I analysed reviews on sitcoms. I took the reviews from various places including newspapers, people's personal blogs, and IMDB, in order to get a wide range of viewpoints. From these I discovered that people become tired of the same old ideas within sitcoms, jokes included should be modern, relatable and easy to understand, and that stereotypes are often liked because it allows the characters to be easily understood. Using this information, we are able to create an effective sitcom that we know will be liked by our target audience.

Georgie looked at audience comments on social networking sites and on IMDB. Therefore, she has learnt the general views of the audience for programmes similar to the one we will create. She has also found out that some sitcoms ask questions on specific characters so that they can find out what the audience thinks of them. This will help us when creating our own sitcom as we now know what sort of characters people like the most, and will be able to include them in our show.

For Charlotte's research she looked at the viewing figures for different E4 sitcoms. She has found out that the two most popular sitcoms are The Inbetweeners and The IT Crowd. Therefore, we can use elements from these shows in order to create a sitcom that people will like. A good reason why these shows are so popular is that they focus on everyday situations so the audience can relate to them. Therefore, we can include everyday situations in our own sitcom.
