Summary of Primary Existing Product Research

Lois Brown
For primary research on existing products I have completed an extra analysis of a different sitcom- 'Friday Night Dinner.' From this analysis I have found out that the Mise en Scene within a sitcom is kept relatively natural in order to get a realistic 'everyday' feel. Because of this, the audience are able to relate to the show, which is a major feature of most sitcoms. I have also found out that stereotypes are often involved in sitcoms, allowing the audience to easily understand the characters. Therefore, as a group, we are able to use the same codes and conventions within our own sitcom, thus making it an effective product that our audience will enjoy.

For her research, Georgie completed a semiotic analysis of the E4 website. From this she found out the type of colour schemes, language and images used in websites aimed at our target audience. She has discovered that using bright, non-gender biased colours would work the best in our website. Also, that certain cultural references (for example abbreviations) are often used in websites aimed at teenagers as it allows them to relate. Due to this research, we will be able to make our own website aesthetically pleasing to our audience and also allow them to relate to it.

Charlotte Maguire

For her primary product research, Charlotte has undergone further research into Todorov's narrative structure. She has found out that each of the 4 sitcoms we researched as a group follow quite similar narrative patterns. They each start with mundane everyday lives lived by the characters, mostly revolving around their homes, work or college. The disruption is also quite a normal issue that the audience may have also faced themselves (The Mighty Boosh is an exception to this, having a surreal theme) meaning they can relate to them. Sitcoms usually end in a return equilibrium so that the narrative can be rounded off a new narrative can begin in the next episode. This research will help us create our own sitcom as we now know what sort of narrative structure to include in it.

Sam Evans

For Sam's primary research on existing products, he found out the interactive elements included in the websites for The IT Crowd and Fresh Meat. These include games, quizzes, behind-the-scenes footage and episodes available to watch. The games and quizzes will appeal to the audience as they have the ability to interact with the show. The behind-the-scenes footage will appeal as it gives the audience an added insight into how the show is made, thus making them feel deeper involved in it. When we make
our own website, we can include the same features so that it will appeal to our audience.
